Why the Rise of the 4PL is Good News for Your Business

Jon Slangerup said it best "By combining technology, processes, transportation and more under one roof, a 4PL can help drive new levels of visibility and productivity as businesses face increasing supply chain pressures" he goes on to say that On-demand delivery, trade uncertainties, soiled information, for your company the list of concerns is long.

Amazon has made two-day delivery the new normal, with retailers racing to build fulfillment operations that can meet customer service demands.  To keep up in this evolving environment, many businesses seek outside expertise. But while outsourcing shipping, packing and other functions to 3PLs is nothing new, some find that model doesn’t go far enough. Unifying internal and outsourced teams remains a challenge, making it difficult to gain a complete picture of the supply chain. Businesses also are collecting vast amounts of supply chain data throughout the organization, but don’t have the infrastructure or expertise to mine it for insights.

Enter the 4PL. Also known as supply-chain-as-a-service (SCaaS), 4PLs act as a true extension of the business by assuming responsibility for all supply chain-related activities. By combining technology, processes, transportation and more under one roof, a 4PL can help drive new levels of visibility and productivity as businesses face increasing supply chain pressures.

Here are some simple facts, the more YOU see, the better your businesses can cope with exceptions, identify redundancies, create synergies, and communicate details to people on the  ground.

That is why TSI Central Station offers On-Site (TM), a staff member that operates from your offices, manages your transport and logistics and works under your instruction. Find out more on how to obtain an On-Site staff member contact us CONTACT

Much like air traffic controllers, 4PLs guide transportation operations, manage product flow, and sometimes help avert disaster.

Why is the flight delayed? Where is the aircraft? When will it arrive? At one time or another, everyone asks these questions. But answers rarely come fast enough from detail-oriented airline attendants, and arrival and departure boards don’t display the specifics.

Above the fray, however, a wealth of real-time information crisscrosses the skies at mach speed. With sweeping panoramas of runways and airspace, and constant contact among airlines and airport authorities, air traffic controllers always know what’s going on. They have visibility and communication.

They have control.

Shippers and consignees often have similar questions and shared challenges trying to uncover answers deep within complex global networks. It’s why some seek control-tower visibility by partnering with fourth-party logistics providers (4PLs) and lead logistics providers (LLPs) that can broadly glean and communicate data among myriad supply chain partners. (See sidebar, left, for an explanation of the differences in provider types.) The more they see, the better businesses can cope with exceptions, identify redundancies, create synergies, and communicate details to logistics operations on the ground.
